Our Thoughts
One of the hindrances for us weekend warriors is gear preparation and organization. Mountainsmith aims to help with a grab and go solution. The modular hauler comes in two sizes, 3 or 4 cubes. Today we are covering the Modular Hauler 3, which is a more utilitarian and convenient solution then any duffel bag. The Hauler is split up by removable, zippered cubes. When traveling through Yellowstone this past February, I found it helpful to have my kitchenware, dry goods and extra coats/gloves isolated, yet still able to move all of them at once. When you do need to move your gear to a different location, the hauler has a handle on each end as well as carrying handles much like a duffel bag. The hauler is also equipped with tie downs to help keep your gear secure during transport. Each cube has carrying handles and has a capacity of 26 liters, which is about the same size as the average everyday backpack. The basic cubes are also color coded to help remind you of the contents within. When needing to access your gear, the oversized zipper with hefty zipper pulls work flawlessly. The cube uses 150d ripstop poly which gives it rigidity and water resistance. The basic cube is great for gear storage, but those who are looking for more specialized organizers can replace the basic cube. Mountainsmith offers a plethora of replacement cubes to fit your needs, the Boot Cube, K9 Cube, Cooler Cubes, Bike Cubes and a Utilitote.

Conclusion
It’s a duffel bag on steroids, simple as that. The awesome part is you can easily organize & locate gear with the color coded cubes. In -27F temperatures the material was quite stiff and almost felt brittle. In reality though, what isn’t going to be somewhat stiff in those temperature extremes. I too found myself not wanting to move in those temps. After several beatings from road trips the material still looks new inside and out. When finished with your adventures you can collapse the hauler and cubes into its provided storage bag to stow away. If you’re the spontaneous type, leave your gear organized & prepared to grab and go for the next adventure.
